How to Choose the Right Industrial Shredder
By the Arc Enterprise engineering team, Vadodara · Updated
Short answer
Choose an industrial shredder by starting from your material and the output size you need, then the capacity in kg per hour. Those three decide the shaft type (single, double or four shaft), cutter design, motor power and screen. Hard or bulky material needs low-speed, high-torque double shaft shredders; uniform output for recycling needs a single shaft shredder with a screen.
1. Start with the material
The material decides almost everything else. Write down exactly what will go into the shredder, the largest piece size, and whether it is wet, oily, abrasive or mixed with metal.
- Plastics (lumps, purging, film, bottles, pipes) — single shaft or double shaft shredder, often followed by a grinder
- Metal and tyre scrap — heavy-duty double shaft shredder with thick cutters
- Pharma rejects (tablets, strips, blisters, cartons) — double shaft shredder with an enclosed hopper
- Paper, files and cartons — double shaft paper shredder
- Kitchen and food waste — low-speed shredder with corrosion-resistant contact parts
- Garden and agro waste (leaves, branches, stalks, husk) — shredder or chipper sized to the thickest branch or stalk
2. Decide the output size
If you only need to reduce volume or destroy material, a double shaft shredder with no screen is usually enough. If the next process (grinder, extruder, composter, briquetting press, biogas digester) needs uniform pieces, you need a single shaft shredder with a screen or a second shredding stage.
3. Work out the capacity
Capacity is quoted in kg per hour, but it changes with the material, its bulk density and the output size. Give your supplier your real daily quantity and working hours, and ask them to size the machine for it with some margin.
4. Compare shredder types
| Type | Best for | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Single shaft (single rotor) | Plastic lumps, purging, wood, uniform recycling feed | Uniform pieces, controlled by screen |
| Double shaft (twin shaft) | Metal, tyres, pharma, paper, mixed and bulky waste | Strips / irregular pieces, no screen needed |
| Four shaft | Fine, uniform output from tough material in one stage | Smaller, uniform pieces with screen |
| Mini double rotor | Small daily quantities: pouches, small bags, small hospital or pharma waste | Small irregular pieces |
5. Check build, automation and service
- Cutter (blade) material and whether blades can be re-sharpened or replaced locally
- Automatic reverse on overload so the machine does not jam
- Conveyor feeding and discharge if you process large volumes
- Installation, operator training, spares and service near your plant
Frequently asked questions
Which shredder is best for plastic recycling?
A single shaft shredder with a screen gives the uniform output plastic recycling needs. For bulky or mixed plastic, a double shaft shredder is used first, followed by a grinder.
What information should I give a shredder manufacturer for a quotation?
The material, the largest piece size, required output size, quantity per day and working hours, how the material will be fed, and where the machine will be installed.
