Single Shaft vs Double Shaft Shredder: Which One Do You Need?

Short answer
A single shaft shredder uses one rotor pushing material against a fixed knife and a screen, so it gives uniform output โ ideal for plastic recycling. A double shaft shredder uses two counter-rotating shafts at low speed and high torque to tear and shear material, so it handles tough, bulky and mixed waste such as metal, tyres, pharma rejects and paper, without a screen.
How each one cuts
In a single shaft (single rotor) shredder, a hydraulic ram pushes material onto a rotor fitted with small cutting inserts, which cut against a stationary bed knife. Pieces stay in the cutting chamber until they are small enough to pass through the screen.
In a double shaft (twin shaft) shredder, two shafts fitted with hook-shaped cutting discs rotate towards each other, grip the material and shear it into strips. Speed is low and torque is high, so it copes with hard and bulky items.
Comparison
| Single shaft shredder | Double shaft shredder | |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting action | Rotor against bed knife | Two shafts shearing |
| Output | Uniform, set by screen | Strips / irregular pieces |
| Speed | Medium | Low, high torque |
| Best materials | Plastic lumps, purging, wood, textiles | Metal, tyres, pharma rejects, paper, e-waste, mixed waste |
| Typical role | Recycling feed, size control | Primary shredding, destruction, volume reduction |
When to use both
Many recycling lines use a double shaft shredder first to break bulky material, then a single shaft shredder or grinder to bring it to a uniform size. A conveyor links the two stages.
Frequently asked questions
Is a double shaft shredder better than a single shaft shredder?
Neither is better in general. Double shaft shredders suit tough, bulky and mixed material and destruction jobs; single shaft shredders suit uniform output for recycling.
Does a double shaft shredder need a screen?
Usually not. It produces strips whose width is set by the cutter thickness. If you need smaller uniform pieces, add a second stage or choose a four shaft shredder.
